The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
