The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
