The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it plunges, 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
