The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
