The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
