The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 and taught to him 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
