The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 There is about its happening no lie. 2 It will bring low (some); (and others) it will exalt; 3 when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking, 4 The mountains bruised and crushed, 5 and will scatter abroad into fine dust. 6 And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups). 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 9 And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: 10 those are they brought nigh the Throne, 11 In Gardens of Delight. 12 A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islam). 13 And a few from among the latter. 14 On thrones decorated, 15 reclining on them, arrayed face to face; 16 immortal youths going round about them 17 with goblets and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 (no brows throbbing, no intoxication) 19 And fruit that they prefer 20 Bird meats that they relish, 21 They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes, 22 Like unto hidden pearls, 23 The reward for what they did. 24 Therein they hear no vain or sinful discourse. 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 NOW AS FOR those who have attained to righteousness - what of those who have attained to righteousness? 27 mid thornless lote-trees 28 And [banana] trees layered [with fruit] 29 and continuous shade, 30 and flowing water 31 And fruit abundant. 32 Neither ending nor forbidden. 33 And [upon] beds raised high. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 And made them virgins, 36 intensely loving and of matching age. 37 For those of the right hand. 38
