The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass, 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, 4 and the mountains are shattered into [countless] shards, 5 So that they shall be as scattered dust. 6 And you become [of] three kinds: 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 Then those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) will be those of the left hand! 9 And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: 10 they who were [always] drawn close unto God! 11 They will dwell in the Gardens of Bliss: 12 (a throng of the ancients 13 And a few of later ages, 14 They will recline on jewelled couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 Round about them shall go youths never altering in age, 17 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk; 19 And such fruits as they fancy, 20 And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire. 21 and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes 22 like unto pearls [still] hidden in their shells. 23 Reward for what they used to do. 24 They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, 25 Except the word peace, peace. 26 As for the people of the right hand, how happy they will be! 27 They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns 28 Bananatrees, piled 29 and spreading shade 30 And water gushing, 31 And fruit in plenty, 32 Neither ending nor forbidden. 33 They shall be on upraised couches, 34 We have formed them in a distinctive fashion, 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Loving (their husbands only), equal in age. 37 for those on the Right, 38
