The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 – and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence – 2 (it will) abase (some) and exalt (others). 3 When the earth is shaken violently, 4 And the mountains are broken down, crumbling 5 and become like scattered dust particles, 6 [on that Day] you shall be divided into three groups. 7 (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? 8 And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! 9 And the preceders are the preceders. 10 Those are they who will be brought nigh 11 In the Gardens of Pleasure, 12 a host of the ancients 13 And a few of the later peoples, 14 On couches wrought of gold, 15 Reclining thereon, face to face. 16 (and there) shall wait on them immortal youths 17 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 (no brows throbbing, no intoxication) 19 And fruits that they may like. 20 And with flesh of fowls from that which they desire. 21 And companions with big beautiful eyes 22 like the pearls in their shells: 23 Reward for what they used to do. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk nor any sinful speech. 25 but only the saying: 'Peace, Peace' 26 The Companions of the Right 27 They shall be in the midst of thornless lote trees, 28 And [banana] trees layered [with fruit] 29 and amid the extended shade 30 And in perpetually flowing water. 31 And fruit in abundance. 32 Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, 33 And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 and shall have made them virgins, 36 Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, 37 For the sake of the companions of the right hand. 38
