A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
