A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
