A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
