A company of the former peoples 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
