a good many of olden times, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
