A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
