A multitude of those of old 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
