A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
