A crowd of earlier generations 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
