A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
