A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
