A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
