These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and many from the later generations. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
