A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
