a multitude of the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
