A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
