a large group of the earlier people 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had been affluent before, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
