A throng of the ancients 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
