a good many of olden times, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
