A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
