a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
