A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
