A company of the former peoples 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
