A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
