a multitude of the ancients, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
