a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
