A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
