A multitude of those of old 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
