A multitude of those of old 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
