A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
