A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
