A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
