a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 "We are ruined, 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
