A company of the former peoples 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
