a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
