A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
