A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Proclaim, "Without doubt all - the former and the latter." 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
