a large group of the earlier people 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
