A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
