A throng of the ancients 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
