The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
